DAVE Armitstead sees his move to Leigh Centurions as the springboard for bigger and better things for himself and the club. The Aussie backrower has ambitions to play in Super League and sees his switch to Leigh as the next step on the road to the top. Armitstead, recently voted as the National League Two Player of the Year, has signed a one-year deal with the Centurions, but hopes to be around much longer. “I’m excited by the prospect of playing for Leigh. My ambitions match those of the club, so in a way it’s an ideal partnership,” says the 24-year-old. Having been surprisingly released by promoted Barrow, Armitstead turned down several other tempting offers before pinning his colours to Leigh’s mast. “To be honest, as soon as Leigh declared their interest I was immediately attracted,” he said. “I met with Neil Kelly and Paul Rowley and was shown round the new stadium and that only confirmed that I knew Leigh was the club for me. “The move into the new stadium is an exciting prospect and I think Leigh are putting a good squad together. I know I’ll be playing with a better calibre of player and that will bring the best out of me.”
