Salford 46 Leigh 12Following the disappointment of missing out on a Super League Franchise, Leigh took the game to one of the top division’s newest clubs before the City Reds romped away in the second half.
Things looked ominous early on for the Centurions as the hosts dominated field position on the back of the forward charges of former Centurion Craig Stapleton.
The ball worked wide for Luke Adamson to put Paul White over for the opener after seven minutes.
John Wilsher converted, but Leigh responded with a try of their own after 17 minutes when Ian Mort was first to an offload from Lee Marsh that bobbled off a couple of defenders.
The Centurions were then punished for a loose offload and Matt Gardner touched down.
Leading 10-4 at half-time, the Reds scored first when Malcolm Alker forced his way over.
Dave Alstead responded for Leigh before Salford cut loose with tries from Richard Myler, Adam Sidlow, Stefan Ratchford and Jordan Turner.
Wilshere finished with seven goals before Leigh grabbed a consolation through Mort’s second but it was too late to prevent defeat.
