Enviroganza fun day

5:20pm Friday 10th October 2008

CHILDREN dressed up in outfits made from junk as part of an environmental awareness day.

The 10th Enviroganza took place at Bolton Town Hall yesterday (FRI) and 200 youngsters from 20 schools took part.

More than 40 youngsters took to the catwalk in costumes they had designed and made from cardboard, bottles and newespaper.

Imogen Fish, aged 10, from St Peters Smithillls Dean CE Primary School, made a costume from plastic bags and juice cartons.

She said: “I had fun making my costume and it has made me think about recycling and helping the environment.

“I have learned a lot and I will definitely be more careful about the things I throw away.”

The year six pupils also took part in quizzes, watched videos and made hats from scrap materials.

They enjoyed a percussion session using a variety of recyclable rubbish.

David Shuttleworth, Bolton Council enforcement officer, said: "Our job is to make Bolton a cleaner, greener and safer place and the Enviroganza is a fantastic way of involving the young people of the town, raising their awareness of green issues and hopefully having a positive effect on their actions in the future.

"We want to get the message across to young people in a fun way and make them aware that they will have a collective responsibility for keeping a vibrant and ambitious town clean and safe for future generations."

The Mayor and Mayoress of Bolton, Cllr Anthony Connell and his wife Maureen, watched the fashion show and presented prizes to the children.

Cllr Connell said: “The outfits that the pupils have come up with are excellent. I will remember this next time my wife says she has nothing to wear.

“The event carries a very serious message but has been done in a fun way.”

The Bolton News has launched Green Heroes 2008 to recognise people doing their bit to help the environment.

We have teamed up with the Middlebrook Retail and Leisure Park to offer prizes to the Greenest School, Business, Community Group, Family and Individual.
